Are these the most beautiful coffee shops in the world?

The Budapest Café is one of many eye-catching businesses featured in “Designing Coffee: New Coffee Places and Branding,” a coffee table book — no pun intended — that puts the world’s most photogenic, eccentric cafés and roasters on display. Its "bright, playful design and color palette transform a former dental office into a bustling and vibrant bakery café," Kingston writes in "Designing Coffee." In an increasingly competitive coffee industry, coffee shop owners are putting thoughts into how their spaces are designed. Across its ambience and menu, the Genovese Coffee House in Sydney offers Australian consumers an "espresso" ticket to Mediterranean café culture. Rosenblatt is calling out its favorite networking and semiconductor stocks as the "age of AI gold rush" kicks into high gear. That's creating an attractive setup for what Rosenblatt views as the "picks and shovels" in the networking and semiconductor industries. "Most large enterprises want to train and run large AI applications in the Cloud, but only a small portion of existing Cloud infrastructure can support it." Beyond the pure-play semiconductor names tied to AI, Rosenblatt is placing its bets on Coherent . Ambarella is another beneficiary of the growing need for to handle sophisticated AI models, down about 17% this year.

Rudy Giuliani gained notoriety as a prosecutor for going after New York City mafias in the 1980s. Recently, he was indicted on RICO charges — the same prosecutorial tool he used to take down mafias. A lawyer who represented prominent New York mobsters said his clients are "fucking thrilled." "I don't want to say the language, but they really ripped Rudy a new a------," he told the outlet. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who witnessed Giuliani's political rise in the city, also chimed in and told Politico that the indictment was "more than Shakespearean."

Investors shouldn't shy away from Coherent despite a lower 2024 forecast, according to Rosenblatt Securities. Shares sold off Wednesday after the company issued disappointing fiscal-year earnings guidance, dropping nearly 30%. "The good news is Coherent received very large 800G Datacom for AI orders in 4Q23 that drove Networking orders up 80% q.q [quarter-over-quarter]." Meanwhile, Genovese says Coherent could be the largest beneficiary of the growth of 800G optical transceivers, which streamline data transmission and gives the company ample exposure to AI. "COHR is the #1 beneficiary of 800G Optical demand for AI, in our opinion," he said.

When four men were charged this week in the brazen armed robberies of two Manhattan jewelers, their ages suggested it might not be their first encounter with the criminal justice system. Among them, according to officials and court documents, the men have ties to the Genovese, Lucchese and Kansas City, Mo., crime families; a history of bank robberies, racketeering and killings; and a jailbreak reminiscent of a Hollywood movie. The defendants are Vincent Cerchio, 69; Michael Sellick, 67; Frank DiPietro, 65; and Vincent Spagnuolo, 65. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York charged the four with stealing $2 million in diamonds and other gems at gunpoint while dressed as construction workers to blend in on busy streets. A fifth man, Samuel Sorce, 25, of Florham Park, N.J., is charged with being a getaway driver in one of the heists.

“We thought there’d be a lot of discussion within the history profession for a while, but the public reaction is something else,” Professor Engerman told The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester in May 1974. What is interesting is that such a conclusion is now necessary to convince white people.”Several months after “Time on the Cross” was published, about 100 historians, economists and sociologists gathered for a three-day conference to discuss the book at the University of Rochester, where Professor Engerman and Professor Fogel taught. The debate was so contentious that The Democrat and Chronicle described it as “scholarly warfare.” Some of the criticism focused on the two men’s emphasis on statistics over the brutal realities of slavery. “They deny the slave his voice, his initiative and his humanity,” the historian Kenneth M. Stampp said at the conference. “They reject the untidy world in which masters and slaves, with their rational and irrational perceptions, survived as best they could, and replace it with a model of a tidy, rational world that never was.”But the Marxist historian Eugene D. Genovese, whose own book about slavery, “Roll, Jordan Roll: The World the Slave Made,” was also published in 1974, called “Time on the Cross” an “important work” that had “broken open a lot of questions about issues that were swept under the rug before.”
